The name Karsten Warholm has become almost synonymous with the men’s 400m hurdles event. His world record run at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics has been called one of the greatest Olympic races in history. But let’s rewind for a bit, who is Karsten Warholm?
Karsten Warholm was born in Ulsteinvik, Norway on February 28, 1996. Originally a decathlon runner, in 2013 he won the under 18 World Championships in this event and he amassed eight gold medals at the Norwegian Youth Indoor Championships. In this same year, he was also successful in the boy’s octathlon at the under 18 World Athletics Championships in Ukraine. Since Karsten Warholm showed more potential on the track, he and his coach began focusing on the 400m hurdles which later proved to be a smart move.
Karsten Warholm competed in the 400m hurdles at the 2016 Rio Olympics but Olympic glory would have to wait for another time as he failed to advance to the finals placing 10th in his semi-final round with a time of 48.81s. At the 2017 World Championships in London, the 21 year old Warholm shocked the world and himself by winning the 400m hurdles in 48.35s.
At the 2019 World Championships in Doha, Karsten Warholm became the fourth man to successfully defend his 400m hurdles title joining the likes of Edwin Moses, Kerron Clement and Abderrahman Samba. He took home the gold medal in 47.42s edging out Rai Benjamin by 0.24s. Amazingly, Karsten Warholm would remain undefeated for his entire 2019 season and now everyone knew he’s someone to keep an eye on especially with the Olympic games on the horizon.
