Ladies and gentlemen, the outdoor track and field season has finally arrived. We kicked things off with the USATF Bermuda Games which was a season opener for many of our favourite athletes. And despite the strong headwinds, we saw some impressive performances that were quite telling of what is to come as we edge closer to the World Championships in July.
However, the Jamaicans weren’t done flexing their sprint supremacy. In a surprise victory, Shiann Salmon led a Jamaican sweep of the women’s 400m hurdles in 55.35s. She was followed by compatriots - Rushell Clayton (55.89s) and Janieve Russell (56.56s). Elsewhere on the men’s side, Steven Gardiner in the 200m managed to hold off the indoor champion - Jereem Richards - winning in 20.79s. Last but not least, Kirani James won the men’s 400m in 45.63s.
While many people may have been alarmed at the rather less than impressive times, we must recognize that the heavy wind throughout the competition was the culprit. A headwind refers to wind blowing in the opposite direction of the athlete’s movement. In other words, the athlete is running against the wind which is known to immensely slow down a sprinter. Conversely, a tailwind is wind blowing in the same direction of the athlete’s movement. This type of wind is known to assist sprinters in achieving faster times. Hence, there is a legal wind limit of 2.0m/s if there is a tailwind especially during the 100m and 200m events.
Nevertheless, these athletes got another opportunity to shine at the USATF Golden Games at the Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut, California. Hopefully, there will be no unfavourable winds to hamper performances this time. Of all the events at these games, I was most excited to see the women’s 100m. This was a star studded race with the likes of Double Olympic champion - Elaine Thompson-Herah, double world under-20 champion - Briana Williams, and 200m Olympic bronze medallist - Gabby Thomas. Coming into this race, my bet was on Thompson-Herah to pick up where she left off in the 2021 outdoor season. I was also expecting to see Briana Williams improve her 100m time and a possible 3rd place finish by Gabby Thomas.
Thompson-Herah, Thomas and Hobbs lined up in heat 1 of the 100m. As expected, Thompson-Herah won this race in 10.89s. Aleia Hobbs took 2nd place in 10.95s and Michelle-Lee Ahye in 3rd position with 10.96s. Looking at this race, Thompson-Herah looked relaxed and to me, she didn't over exert herself which shows she still has some more gas in the tank for her other upcoming races. As usual, she came from behind and by the 70m mark, her top end speed kicked in and she pulled away from her other competitors. Congratulations to the speed queen, Elaine Thompson-Herah, on winning her first 100m of the season. Definitely, many more wins to come.
Special congratulations as well to Briana Williams for winning her heat in 10.91s. She's truly a rising star and a part of the new generation of upcoming sprinters from Jamaica.
Unfortunately, Thompson-Herah withdrew from the finals which was won by American sprinter, Twanisha Terry, in 10.77s with an illegal tailwind (3.3 m/s). It is still unclear to us why Thompson-Herah withdrew but I'm hoping that it wasn't an injury or anything serious to hinder her from replicating all those fast times from last season. Whatever it is, I am trusting that she will be back on her feet soon and in action again before April ends. Over to you now viewers, what did you think about Elaine Thompson-Herah's 100m opener?
Thanks so much for watching!
